Mirerani Tanzanite Cultural Tourism: Mirerani is a small village located 39 kilometers south of Arusha. It is a truly authentic Maasai and Tanzanite experience. It takes only 15 minutes to drive from Kilimanjaro International Airport (KIA) and 1 to 1.5 hours from the towns of Moshi and Arusha, which are approximately 65 kilometers away. Tanzanite mining takes place only in the small town of Mirerani, which is surrounded by beautiful hills. This distinguishes it as a destination of its own kind, where authentic Masai culture blends seamlessly with the Tanzanite mining industry.

Mirerani village tour

A warm welcome to Mirerani will lead you to a Tanzanite gallery where you can see cuttings and various gemstones on display. The tour will continue to the mining area on the hills, where you will learn about mining in the area. Green garnet, moonlight, and rod light are some of the other gemstones found near these blue rocks. Your journey through the tunnels to the blue rock surface is an once-in-a-lifetime adventure in which you will learn how Tanzanite is extracted from such hard rocks and then collected for sale in the local market or processed for export. Leaving the mining area and heading to the Tanzanite market, one is greeted by a stunning view of Mount Meru and Africa’s roof, Kilimanjaro.

Maasai Village Cultural Walk

You will then travel to an authentic Maasai village, where you will spend a couple of hours learning and experiencing the Maasai way of life. You will also go on a walking safari in Maasai territory, where you will almost certainly encounter local people going about their daily activities. Discover how people are intertwined with wildlife and the environment from which they obtain food and medicine. Pass by a local school on your way back for a quick interaction with students and teachers.

Mirerani Tanzanite local market visit

You will stroll over to tanzanite gallery, where different gemstones are cut and displayed. After that, stroll a short distance through Mirerani village to the Tanzanite daily operating local market, where you’ll have the chance to talk to local miners, brokers, and buyers from different regions. Learn how the tanzanite industry functions in this rural area.

GETTING THERE:

There are two ways to reach Mirerani:

From Arusha or Moshi, fly to Kilimanjaro International Airport (KIA). Mirerani is about 65 kilometers from Moshi and Arusha, which take about 1.5 hours to drive to.

Mirerani is 39 kilometers from Arusha via the Kijenge road to Mbuguni, and a one-hour drive will take you to this unique destination with friendly people. There are daily buses from Arusha to Mirerani; one can take the morning bus or the evening bus back to Arusha.

The Mirerani CT coordinator will make all arrangements for you at a reasonable price for all of your accommodation needs. What do you need when joining a Tanzanite expedition?
